Loaded Potato Soup

For about a year not I have been looking for a loaded potato soup recipe that was close to one a restaurant (Spoon Lickin's) in our city, which is now closed, used to sell. I was in love with this soup. I have tried over  different recipes trying to find one that was even half as good and nothing :(. I am across a recipe for loaded potato soup a friend of mine "pinned" and figured I would give it a shot. Well turns out it is AWESOME!!!! So close to the soup from the now closed restaurant!

Loaded Baked Potato Soup
Serves 6
1 pound bacon, roughly chopped
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1 large carrot, peeled and diced
3/4 cup diced celery

4 large Russet potatoes, peeled and diced
4 medium red potatoes, diced

***I just used normal potatoes***

1/4 cup flour
2 cups chicken or vegetable stock
Coarse salt, freshly ground pepper, to taste
4 cups heavy whipping cream
Optional garnishes: chopped chives (I used green onions), bacon bits, sour cream, shredded cheddar and Monterrey Jack cheese (I used mixed cheese from the shredded cheese bags)
  1. In a 6- to 8-quart stockpot over medium heat, fry bacon until crisp.
  2. Remove bacon and drain on paper towels, reserving half for garnish. In bacon fat, cook onions, carrots, and celery until the onions are translucent. Add potatoes and cook for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Whisk in flour and stir constantly over low heat until the flour is cooked and the mixture has thickened slightly, about 5 to 7 minutes. Add chicken stock and half of the bacon. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Over medium-high heat, bring the soup to a simmer and cook for 25 minutes or until the potatoes are soft. Mash some of the potatoes for thicker, creamier texture. Add whipping cream and simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Adjust thickness by adding water or stock. Soup should have a creamy consistency.
  6. Season to taste, and garnish with toppings.

My soup is not as "pretty" as on the photo but it is AWESOME!!!!

Hello Kitty Headband

With no party hats to be found in Hello Kitty theme for my niece's birthday, which she just "had" to have, I turned to Pinterest in hopes I could find something that would be super cute but easy to make. I made 10 headbands, the kids loved them and were excited that they got to take them home!

What you need:

White felt (about 3 sheets)
Pink felt (about 3 sheets)
Plastic headbands (I got them at the dollar store 4 to a pack)
Ribbon of your choice for the centre of the bows
Glue gun
Glue sticks

Directions:

Cut the white felt into long ovals so you can fold them in half for the ears. (Took me a few tries to get the ears the way I wanted them)
Cut the pink felt into bow shapes
Cut tiny bits of ribbon for the centre of the bows
Fold the ears over the headband and glue. (One per side of headband)
Fold the bows and glue the ribbon onto the centre of the bow
Glue the bow to an ear.

Pretty simple, super cute.

Hello Kitty Treat Bags

For my niece's 7th birthday she decided that she just "had" to have Hello Kitty as the theme. It turns out there is pretty much nothing in Sarnia for Hello Kitty expect one balloon, even London had very little. I decided to make this an extra special birthday I would hand make her treat bags, which was very easy.

She loved the bags, all the girls did and parents were asking me where I got them!

What you need:

White paper bags enough for each child. (I used brown only because I liked these bags)
White felt (I think I used 4 sheets)
Pink felt (I used 3 sheets)
Black marker (I used a sharpie)
Yellow marker (again I used a sharpie)
Ribbon of your choice
Hot glue gun
Glue sticks

Directions:

Cut 2 triangles for the ears per bag.
Cut 1 bow shape for the bow per bag
Glue the ears on
Glue the bow on and add a piece of ribbon for the centre of the bow
Draw black eyes on the bag
Draw a yellow nose
Draw black whiskers on each side of the "face"

Muffin Pan Omelet

A breakfast sandwich and tea from Tim Hortons seems like the easiest way to start the day, but it adds up money and calorie wise. I found an easy way to have a hot breakfast sandwich all week! yes that still leaves the tea, but I am sure one day I will find a green tea that is just as good at home as it is at Tim Hortons.

These are the items I used, you can alter them to your tastes!

What you need:

A clean muffin tin
Cooking spray
diced onion
diced red pepper
diced ham
grated cheese
5 eggs
1 cup of milk ( I am guessing on how much milk I used)
Mixing bowl
Whisk
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350.
Spray muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray
Crack eggs into mixing bowl, add milk, and salt and pepper, whisk until mixed.
Pour into muffin tins about half way.
Add your vegetables and meat and desired to each muffin tin.
Cook for 20-25 mins. Allow to cook and then store in an air tight container.
I would say they will be good for no more than a week.

Cleaning product organizer

I have millions of cleaning supplies, mainly because I shop at Costco and love to shop in bulk!!
The closet I have for cleaning products is always a mess, yes even the irony of that is not lost on me, and I have to dig under everything to find anything that I need. Well Pinterest to the rescue for that one!!!

This "Pin" has many great ideas, but so far I have only used the one from it.

What you need:
A hanging shoe organizer (I got mine at Liquidation World for $3.00)
A door that will will still close with it hung on it

Directions:
Hang the shoe organizer (Works so much easier if you hang it up first)
Fill with cleaning products!

Not everything can go into for a few reasons such as too heavy or too big, but for the most part everything is now hung up.

No more digging with hopes something else is not going to fall on my head!!!

Dry Erase Board Erasers

I love dry erase boards I use them for everything from shopping lists on the fridge to the kids and my calender and the summer daily schedule.

They are eco friendly because you do not have the waste of paper, etc.
The only problem I have with them is when I need to erase something to fix it I have to go and get paper towel from the other room, I know seems like a minor thing but when you are in a hurry it makes it seem like a huge thing.

Got to love trolling on Pinterest!! I found this really cool idea for have erasers on the ends of your dry erase markers. Of course I had pom poms on hand so I figured I would give it try, worst case scenario it would be a waste of 30 minutes of my time,  best case it would work. At first I was worries they would not hold up on the ends, I am by no means gentle with anything, turns out I was wrong they work great and none have fallen off as of yet!!!!

What you need:
Pom Poms (I matched the pom pom colour to the marker colour the best I could)
Hot Glue Gun
Glue Sticks
Dry Erase Markers (I have about 50 of these in an array of colours)

Directions:
Hot glue the pom pom onto the end of the dry erase marker
Let dry a few mins

All pomed out!

Will it work?
Oh yeah they work awesome!!!!

DIY Grout Cleaner

I never really thought about it, until someone told me my grout is supposed to white not gray. After that conversation I got thinking about how I can get it clean without too much work as I have tile with grout in 5 rooms of my home.

Again I was trolling Pinterest, what a surprise, and found a recipe for DIY grout cleaner. Figured it was worth a try and I happened to have everything on hand needed to make it.

What you need:
7 cups water
1/2 cup baking soda
1/3 cup ammonia (or lemon juice)   I used the Lemon juice.
1/4 cup vinegar.
Empty Spray Bottle.

Directions:
Spray on grout
Leave for about 1 hour
Scrub vigorously with a scrub brush.

I didn't leave it on the area I cleaned for quite 1 hour because the dogs were trying to lick it, but it worked. Once I get time to do an entire floor I will leave it on for the full hour.

My only concern with this is if your grout is really old and already needs fixing some of the grout will come away as you scrub so I wouldn't scrub too hard.

After

Laundry washer Crystals

I can't believe I have not blogged about these yet!

I loved buying the laundry Crystals that you put into the washer, but they are super expensive and when Richard is laid off while the little extras that I love get cut back for the more important things like the kids lunch stuff. I was "trolling" Pinterest when I came across how to make your own laundry Crystals, I figured what is the harm in trying them.

I have my list in hand on what I need to make these and I head to the real Canadian superstore. To my dismay I could not find rock salt/ice cream salt anywhere. I wonder around until I find a young man who as I ask where the rock salt or ice cream salt might be? he sounds confident when he says to me right this way, turns out he takes me to the road salt. I look at him and look at the road salt, then I start to explain that this is for laundry and what I am making with it. "OOOOHHHH" he says and asks me to follow him, so I do again he is confident that he now knows what I need, he leads me to the laundry aisle and hands me the laundry Crystals. Okay I look at him and gently explain no I want to make these, he says "I don't know how to make them". At this point I am not sure what to say and I try to explain again this time I say I am looking for just ice cream salt "ohhhh" he says and radios to the grocery department the guy on the end says no you don't use salt to make ice cream. So I say thank you for your time and head to the spice aisle where I pick up course canning salt.

Next stop was the waterbug to pick up essential oils, they were far more helpful. They are always great in there and know their stuff!!

Once I got home and made my laundry Crystals I ended up making enough to fill 2 of store bought laundry Crystal bottles twice!!!!

I used vanilla essential oils, they work awesome!!!!! my laundry smells GREAT!!!!

Pink Owl Cake

The wonderful women who asked me to make her husband a "Walking Dead" cake, placed another order with me.

She always picks such wonderful (testing my talents) cakes, she sends me a picture of the cake she would like and I recreate it!

This is the picture she sent me:

She wanted the cake pink, the flavours vanilla and raspberry and the candles to be the number 21.

My first thought when I looked at this cake was "I can make that". My second thought was "I know I can do it, but how?".

I decided that my 3D mini pan would be perfect for the owl!!! Richard so sportively said "There is no way you are going to be able to make that look like an owl".

The icing was of course homemade I used fresh raspberries in the icing. The cake and the owl were both vanilla. I did not use fondant to cover the round cake, but the owl was done in fondant to make it look like an owl.

This is how my cake looked:

The cake was picked up not put together, I learned my lesson with sending tiered cakes already put together. If you client is picking it up they have to put it together, if I am delivering it when I set it up. Of course I make sure the client has no problems with putting it together before I even start the order.

I think the cake turned out awesome and so did the client!!!!

This cake has now been preordered for Sept. for a little girls first birthday!!!!

P.S. Richard was wrong my owl looks like an owl lol. He was shocked as how awesome it looked!!!
and I now have a facebook page for my cakes!!!

Fish tail braid

I suck at doing hair, I am in no way a girly girly and never have been, no make up, no fancy hair, jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. Keira LOVES her hair, nails, make-up (Kids make-up) and dressing fancy, so I turned to Pinterest for ideas on what do to with her hair.

I have always liked the look of the fish tail braid, but I have never tired one before. I found this "Pin" with super easy to follow instructions that even I could do. Keira loved her hair and since I have learned how to do this braid I do it in pig tails, pony tails, loopy loops (Ill explain in another blog), just about anything.

She has since asked that I do something different with her hair every day. That has not happened, but I have been doing a lot of different things!

As always here is the link to the "Pin" http://pinterest.com/pin/24347654207326555/

Cookie Sheet Cleaner

I was not impressed with this "pin". I tried it two different ways.

I found, what I thought was going to be an awesome cleaning solution for my well loved cookies sheets, turns out it didn't work.

The first time I tired it, I followed the instructions to a tee and nothing happen, so I tried it again this time giving it a little scrub before letting it sit for 3 hours and still it did not work. Maybe my pans are so just so well loved that nothing will work on them.

Anyway this is what you are suspposed to do:
Put a layer of baking soda on your cookie sheet
Put a layer of Proxide on your cookie sheet
Put a second layer of baking soda

Let sit for 2-3 hours

I will include the "pin" at the bottom of this and maybe one of my readers will have better luck then I did.

Silky Leg Scrub

Everyone women loves silky legs, but who has the time to do all that work everyday. GOOD news I found a scrub, may I add that I am a first time scrub user I just never had the time or want to do it before, this scrub lasts about a week for and it makes a big batch so you make it once, use it once a week and the batch will last a while.

I learned the first time using this not to sit in the tub while using it, the water looks and feels nasty after.

I am going to copy and paste the directions from the website attached to the Pinterest link and as always I will post the Pinterest link below.

I used an empty washed out fondant container to store it.

WARNING!!!! If you have dogs they will try to eat it, I am not sure why but its gross and well chances are it's not that good for them lol.

Scrub:
-2 1/2 Cups of Sugar (Yes, just normal sugar)
-1 Cup of oil (I used Olive Oil. You can also use Canola, Vegetable, Avocado, Coconut or any fragrance body oil you have).
-5 Tablespoons of a citrus juice. Preferably fresh squeezed. (I used lemon from the bottle as that is all I had on hand)

Bath Time:
-Draw you a warm/hot bath.
-Soak for about five minutes. (I stayed in longer because I like to relax in the tub once in awhile)
-Shave one leg.
-Take a palm full of your homemade sugar scrub and scrub that leg and then rinse off.
-Shave your leg again. Yes, again.
-Take a palm full of sugar scrub and scrub your leg again.
-Repeat on your other leg.
-After your bath, dry off and then lotion your legs.

Frozen Yogurt Dots

I came across this awesome idea on Pinterest! The kids don't really like yogurt by itself even though it is really good for them, they will eat frozen yogurt, but only because I tell them it is ice cream (Yes I lie to the children). I always buy yogurt when it is on sale for $1.00 and rarely will it get eaten so when I found this I could not resist trying the idea out and seeing if the kids would eat it. I happened to have three kinds on hand (It was on sale last week at No frills) strawberry, peach and raspberry. The strawberry and the peach both a pieces of while fruit in them which was a minor inconvenience.

Items needed:

Pastry bag or sandwich bag
Your choice of yogurt (It is easier to with no fruit chunks)
Cookie sheet (or other flat surface)
Wax paper
Scissors
Spoon
Small snack bags (or another container)

Directions:

Line your cookie sheet or other flat surface with the wax paper.
Fill your pastry or sandwich bag with your yogurt using the spoon.
Cut the end of the bag open just a little bit creating a "tip".
Gently squeeze "dots" on to the wax lined cookie tray.
Place the cookie tray into the freezer for at least 1 hour.
Place dots into small snack bags and put into the freezer.

These are simple to make and taste great. The kids loved them and so did I. The snack bags make it easy to grab and snack on something healthy.

Yogurt

Yogurt in pastry bag with tip cut.
Dots on the cookie sheet before freezing.

Dots on cookie sheet after freezing.

In a snack bag ready to be eaten.

I hope you and family enjoy these as much as we do!!

Window Wipes

I love to save money anywhere I can, but then again who doesn't  Homemade cleaning products is one of the best ways to help save money in your home.

I came across these window wipes, they have other wipes posted; however, I have not tried them yet. At first I was worried they were going to cause streaks I HATE STREAKS. These really work, and they are super easy to make. I made enough to give my sister half the batch. I had one lysol wipe container waiting to go out for the blue box so I used that to store the wipes in. Its great because you can pull one out at a time.

I buy my lysol wipes and paper towels at Costco, so it is the big lysol wipes container I used.

This is the instructions I have copied and pasted them from the pin which I will include at the bottom.

    Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol
  • 1/2 cup vinegar

Directions

Mix together 2 cups of water, 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol and a ½ cup of vinegar. You are going to mix it all together, then pour it on your wipes, remove the paper towel center. Then you can just lift your wipes from the middle.

They have lasted a long time a few months (I do not wash my windows everyday)

This is a before picture. See all my dog snots!

This is an after picture. No more dog snots!
As I said here is the link to the pin on Pinterest http://pinterest.com/pin/24347654207066821/

Changing...Again

While lately I have been addicted to Pinterest it is a website that has millions (I am sure a whole lot more) of "pins" each pin is either just a picture or linked to a website with instructions on how to do or make a wide variety of items, or even just tips. Well it has pretty much everything lol. I have been trying different thing on the site and posting pictures and if it worked or not on facebook. I am happy to say that so far all but one of the "pins" has worked. I have decided that I am going to add this aspect to my blog. I know over the years I have added many things, Owen, crocheting, personal stuff, cakes etc. So now this is just one more thing to blog about and I am going to do my best to blog at least once a day.

I have been having a blast trying new things from Pinterest there are so many great ideas and tips to try out.

I hope that those who started to follow my blog when it was mostly about Owen will continue to follow me. I will of course still post about my son whom I love with all my heart, think about on a daily basis and of course see as much as possible. He is growing and loves that I am his "special friend", I love that as well. It gives the special bond we share a name.

Keira's 7th Birthday!!!

I planned, and did everything for my nieces 7th birthday. I was so excited for her. Of course she wanted Hello Kitty, which by the way you can not find anything Hello kitty for birthday parties in Sarnia I had to go to London to get everything for it!

She wanted it at the Movie theater; however, there were no kids movies playing at all on the date we wanted to hold her birthday, so the next choice was swimming at the YMCA well turns out you can not so a swim party at the YMCA unless you are 10+, in the end we ended up going with Hi-way bowl. I will never ever have another birthday party at the Hiway bowl. The staff was rude, the kids were not allowed refills on their drinks, no outside food or drinks expect for the cake, Richard was not even allowed to drink his coffee in the party room, and they played kids dance music, but got mad when they started to dance (BTW we had the bowling alley to ourselves so it was not like they were bugging anyone.

Keira loved her party, I made the cake of course, and her hair bows for the party! She had so much fun her only complaint was 2 hours was not long enough lol. We had an awesome face painter from the Painted Cat!!!
