The school at home approach

As we slowly step into this exciting journey of homeschooling I worry what level he is at, where he is going to be, is he on track? I think every parent worries about this even when they haven't made the decision to home school. We had an appointment today because I was concerned with Blaines speech and the way he pronounces his B's, F's and S's. To my relief after listening to him speak and asking Blaine lots of questions his pediatric specialist said he has the speech and sentence structure of a 6 year. Well didn't that just give me a giant mom pat on the back, look at us go, we got this! Yes I am telling that to myself to convince myself more than anything else.

Homeschoolers consider everything before 6 years old as preschool other than a few select lines of homeschooling that you can choose to follow, those are in my opinion very rigorous and lack in allowing the social aspect of life and making learning fun. Picture children sitting at a desk or kitchen table leaned over books, silent and focused on their lessons.

Oh man the ideas on pinterest for teaching junior kindergarten are to me exciting, amazing and so many that there isn't enough time to do them all, to others this would be very overwhelming which I understand. When I first looked up home school there were so many different types it made my head spin and I went “nope can't do this”. What if I pick the wrong type? Was the question I asked myself most often while reading through the types. I read some, not all, about each one and decided it was best we take parts and pieces from each one. Which is referred to as relaxed home schooling.

Blaines official home school doesn't start until September but, since this past summer we have been doing a few pages each day in the Pre-K workbook by Complete Canadian Curriculum. I buy his books from Costco but you can get them at Walmart and online. He loves his work book. We will continue with this of course come September. This is never forced, it is asked in the morning with breakfast would you like to do your work book? If he says yes then we do our three pages right then and there if he says no I ask again later in the day. Some days we get the three pages done,(one from each section) some days we get one and other days we do none (insert shock and aw!).

One type of homeschooling is the school at home approach, you order the programs (which tends to be very expensive) you get work books, text books, a schedule that they are to follow and study guides. To me this program is very rigid and focused on children who can learn strictly by book work. Some children work well in this structure and for others it would be hell. For us this isn't the route I wanted to start with as I want Blaine to find excitement and fun in learning, later on if this is the path he needs to follow then I will of course follow his needs and move towards this route!

As I said I will be taking a little bit from each type of home school style and put it into our learning from the school at home approach we will be doing a couple of pages from the Canadian Curriculum book each day.

When I was in school I learned well from both seat work and hands on learning. As an adult it depends on what I am trying to learn. I am the type of person who can look at most things and figure out how to fix the problem, I am also the type of person who likes to read to learn something new for fun.

When in school did you struggle with being forced seat learning? Did you learn well from books and reading?

Journey into home schooling

As I watch a million excited/sad posts on the mom groups on Facebook and from my friends who have children Blaine's age about them being registered for school, its a mix of emotions for them from excited to “have a break” to sad “their babies are growing up”. I decided when Blaine was born that I would home school him for a number of reasons including our school system is very messed up and has been for years, even since the beginning according to some. The amount of high school suicides due to bullying in schools is extremely high in our city, it seems the school and support systems has broken down.

Everyone is quick to blame just the teachers but it doesn't rest solely upon their shoulders, it is in the hand of everyone as a whole. The parents who believe their children can do no wrong, the teachers who have given up because the kids just wont listen, the changes in curriculum which makes no sense to anyone, even collage and university teachers wont teach it. It seems somewhere along the line that communication has broken down or maybe it was never there to begin with.

I was going to say we have taken the power from the schools, teachers and parents but we haven't. What has gone away is the support system. We have become so obsessed with how we appear on the outside, how strong we are to be able to do everything ourselves. We have lost our village, well not lost it so much as we have shut our village out because it has become how much better each of us is instead of being what the children need.

As school age approaches those who have opinions that I shouldn't home school have gotten louder. Those opinions usually start and end with they are concerned for the social aspect. I think the social thing is really funny for a couple of reasons. With sports, activities, field trips, co-ops and so many other things that the home schooling group does socialization should be the least of most peoples worries maybe focus on the social skills of the children who are bullies.

I had many doubts and after listening to those who criticized me and my decision to home school the doubts got worse. I started to question if I could really do it, if I was capable of teaching my son everything he needs to know for life and learning. Thankfully the home school group was hosting an information night pretty much in the same week that “everyone” was coming down very hard on my choices. That night with women and men who have been home schooling for years, some have teenagers and some have ones who have already entered collage and university, I listened to what they are teaching in schools (I already knew but hearing it from others helps reassure you), after being asked if I taught my son his colours, numbers, how to count, his ABC's, how to potty, walk, eat, talk, etc when I responded with “of course” she responded with then you already are his teacher.

There are some moment where I still doubt myself and my abilities but I know deep down we can do this and it is what is best for him. If I ever get stuck there are many services to help and always someone in the homeschooling world who has already been there and done that.

So here we go!!!

Do you home-school? Where you home-schooled?

Grateful

Its Friday, it is a beautiful day, my son is in an awesome mood, I hurt everywhere but I am enjoying today and life.

I stayed in bed this morning and snuggled with my son, I got out of bed before he wanted to, I love snuggles, one day he wont want to do it anymore so I am taking as many as he is willing to give right now!

I ate my oatmeal like I do every morning and today it warmed me a little bit more than normal!

I made my to do list and it wasn't two pages long today, only 1 page!

My son "helped" me work out and as I was about to get frustrated with him and the dogs for being in the way I took a breath and just enjoyed them being close to me. One day they wont be in my way, one day I will workout without interruptions and I will miss it all.

We did yoga together and as he attempted to copy my moves I realized just how big he was getting, I remember baby-wearing him when he was 6 weeks old and working out.

As I am trying to bribe him to come walk the dogs with me, I let him "win" and we are at home he is playing with my phone and I am working away on client orders.

Today I am grateful to be alive, to be able to hold my son, feel the sun on my skin, to breath. Yes I hurt everywhere but today I am not going to let it get to me, today I am grateful to just be!

Happy Friday Day All. Stop and take a breath, a real breath one that touches you!

Cars 3rd birthday

It started out me finding Cars party supplies in London at Fresh Co LAST SEPTEMBER!!!!. I decided right then even if Blaine doesn't like the Cars movies his party will be Cars. You can't say no to supplies for 0.49 each!!! As time went on I kept my eyes open for more Cars themed supplies and well the new Cars hadn't been released yet so there wasn't much. Turns out Toys R Us was ending their sales of party supplies, yeah me! I got pretty much everything for his party under $15.00 of course not including food or pinata.

This years party wasn't like the years before, people who normally show up and should have shown up, but he had an awesome time and loved every minute of it.

I had to make the cupcakes for the Sarnia Humane Society's Snow White Party so Blaine got the short end of the stick and his cupcakes had cars toys on them instead of fondant figures, he loved them anyway.

Just like every year after his party we went to East Side Marios and had the pants scared off him by the wait staff singing Happy Birthday to him.

Blaines birthday outfit

Last years outfit didn't so as planned because well I was behind on EVERYTHING. This year I am on the ball and I made his outfit last night.

In our business we create a lot of our own patterns or use old clothing to make a pattern out of and modify as we need. This time I used an old pair of his shorts to make the shorts for his outfit, the only problem with this is HOURS of seam ripping to make sure you have everything including the seam alliance. I had fabric for his shorts months ago but we ended up needing it for a client order, so I went to Chatham where my favourite fabric store is located, R&B Fabrics.
R&B Fabrics is a small local business that is family run. The staff and owner is amazing, the amount of fabric they have is astonishing.

After hours of seam ripping I had my pattern, woot! I pinned the pattern to the Disney Cars fabric I picked out. Cut it all out, and started sewing, I have never in my life made shorts and the down side of doing a pattern from clothing is there are no instructions. It took 3 seam rips but I now know how to do them and they turned out awesome. I got Blaine to try them on and he wouldn't take them off.

The shirt I made as well, kinda, I bought the plain white shirt at Walmart, printed and cut the iron ons and put them on the shirt.

All in all the outfit turned out amazing and I can't wait to see him wear it at his birthday.

Blaine update July 2017

Time flies when your having fun!! Blaine will be 3 years old Aug 5th. Its crazy how fast they grow and learn.

He is day time potty trained. Night time is a different story. He hates wearing diapers now and yes tells me when he has to pee and poop I don't even ask him unless its right before we head out. Blaine has a new obsession of peeing in the grass so hey it works for when we are outside or at a park with no bathroom the life of raising boys!

He is super smart, loves to make friends, plays and shares well with others (most of the time).

Last summer I created a list of everything that Blaine needed to know before he started kindergarten.
I went online and I searched for lists, every list was different. So I created a master list from each of those lists.

Blaine loves being outside, hiking, walking, the park, the beach and just exploring everything! He makes friends everywhere we go. Right now his favourite colour is Purple and he likes to play cat and mouse. We love going to the animal farm but he slightly scared of the animals this year, other than the bunnies. He loves food, not a fan of meat but that's okay. Loves his fruit and veggies. He speaks very well and NEVER stops talking, but I love it. We play cars most of the day and build with blocks. He is scared of pretty much every bug which is weird because I am not and have always exposed him to them.

Blaine is in preschool 2 days a week from Sept to June. He loves it and now that it is summer he asks about it at least once a day. His favourite people right now are Mommy and Grandpa. My child is stubborn and hard headed, has to learn everything the hard way and sometimes more then once lol.

I love to watch him just playing pretend with his cars and tools. Oh he has to fix everything :)

Preschool

My search started in September 2016 for a preschool, an actual preschool not this day care stuff. I work from home my child doesn't need daycare and I wanted him school prepared not babysat.

First off you need get on the waiting list early because spots at a real preschool are very hard to come by. I was picky about what I was looking for an happened to find it in a town about 20 mins from us.

The teachers are amazing, the school is amazing and it is, I am pretty sure, the only one like it anywhere in our area.

Children in the PELP program attend 2 days a week for 5.5 hours, if its a month with an extra week we have to pay for those two days which isn't and issue at all. They are served 2 snacks and hot lunch everyday. Each parent is asked to bring in snack once a month for all the children which I don't mind doing at all, it allows me to get creative. Once a month parents have to go in and clean for about an hour.

If you haven't guessed its a co-op and it is a not for profit which for me is amazing! I helped as much as I could this year with anything they needed and I will be joining the bored of directions in Aug, heres to hoping I get the Vice Present spot that has been vacant for far to long.

Blaine was smart from the get go and when I got his review in June he was doing great in all aspects! There were a couple things we need to work on his F's they come out like B's (He says bish instead of fish, sounds like bitch lol we all get a good giggle). He couldn't pull his pants up over his diaper, which he can now do and he can't put his own coat on.

The school runs on the support of the government which is bare minimum, support of the parents and the community as well.

At first he would cry every day when I dropped him off for about 20 mins, but after a week he was doing great and talks about his friends there still. Now that its summer he misses school a lot.

Originally I wasn't going to send him to preschool at all, figured whats the point if I want to home school. I decided the social aspect of it was important for him, he loves other kids and loves playing with them, even gets sad when they have to leave the park.

As a parent who was picky about where my son went and what he would be doing all day I suggest you don't give up, call every preschool, go visit, spend the time getting to know the teachers and environment your child will be learning in and never ever forget to follow your childs lead if after a few weeks they still freak out when going then something could be wrong! Follow your childs cues, ask questions even at 2 they can tell you what they like and don't like, communicate with the teachers and if your child is still not comfortable there find another one. Your childs first experiences with education can make or break them for life just remember that!
